Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo said on Thursday he was assaulted during a robbery and posted a picture of himself on Instagram with a cut above his right eye.
Cancelo did not mention where the incident took place but the club later said it happened at the 27-year-old's home.
"Unfortunately today I was assaulted by four cowards who hurt me and tried to hurt my family," Cancelo said.
"When you show resistance this is what happens.
"They managed to take all the jewellery and leave me with my face in this state.
"The most important thing for me is my family and luckily they are all OK."
City said in a statement they were giving support to the player and his family and that he is helping the police with their enquiries.
Lukaku's comments on being unhappy at Chelsea 'unhelpful': Tuchel
Romelu Lukaku's comments on being dissatisfied with life at Chelsea are "unhelpful" and will attract unnecessary attention, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said on Friday.
Lukaku told Sky Italy that he is unhappy with Tuchel's system while also admitting he would like to return to Serie A side Inter Milan at some point in his career.
"We don't like it of course. It brings noise that we don't need and it's not helpful," Tuchel told reporters ahead of Chelsea's match against Liverpool on Sunday.
"We don't want to make more out of it than it actually is."
"It is easy to take lines out of context, shorten lines, make headlines and then realise later that it is not so bad.
"We can take the time to try and understand what is going on because it does not reflect the daily work, attitude and behaviour which Romelu shows here at Cobham."
Lukaku left Inter in August and returned to Chelsea for a second stint in a deal worth a club record 97.5 million pounds ($131.78 million).
