World Cup Roundup: Germany, US go through; heartbreak for Portugal, Ghana

Thomas Mueller's second-half goal gave Germany a 1-0 victory over the United States in World Cup Group G on Thursday.

The Americans also advanced to the last 16 after Portugal beat Ghana 2-1 in the other match in the group on Thursday.

Germany topped the group and will face Algeria, Group H’s runner-up, while the United States finished second and will face Group H's winner Belguim.

Portugal win over Ghana in vain as both sides bow out

An own goal by John Boye and a late strike by Cristiano Ronaldo gave Portugal a 2-1 victory over incident-hit Ghana on Thursday, but it was not enough to make the second round as both sides exited the World Cup.

Portugal finished level on four points with the United States in Group G but the Americans advanced to the last 16 courtesy of a better goal difference despite their 1-0 loss to group winners Germany in Recife.

Ten-man Belgium end Korea's hopes

Belgium strolled into the World Cup last 16 on Thursday after Jan Vertonghen's late goal gave them a 1-0 win over a South Korean side unable to take advantage of a 45-minute numerical advantage and who exit the tournament.

Belgium top the group on nine points and will play Group G runners up the United States.

Draw sends Algeria through, Russia home
