India's Sania Mirza's impressive run in the $ 75,000 Forest Hills Women's Tennis Classic championship came to an end Saturday as she lost the title clash to Czech Republic's Lucie Safarova. Third seed Sania was beaten 6-3, 5-7, 4-6. This was her last WTA event in the run up to the US Open beginning on Monday.
Safarova won $ 22,000, while Sania got $12,000.
Sania had not dropped a set in her run to the final. She began with a 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 win over Israel's Shahar Peer in the first round and a 6-2, 6-1 rout of Italian Roberta Vinci in the quarterfinals. In the semis, Sania ended 15-year-old American Alexa Glatch's dream run 6-4, 6-4.
Sania, who broke into the top-50 earlier this month, has already notched up two victories over top 10 players this season, stunning US Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova en route to a quarterfinal finish at Dubai and crushing Nadia Petrova to reach the third round at San Diego.
