Veteran American Kristin Armstrong claimed a third consecutive road time trial gold to deny former Russian doper Olga Zabelinskaya what would have been a controversial triumph on a rain-soaked course at the Rio Games on Wednesday.
Double London medallist Zabelinskaya, who served an 18-month suspension for a banned stimulant and was only cleared to compete in Rio last week, had set the fastest time with only Armstrong still on the 29.7km course.
Armstrong had been quickest over the opening 10km and then produced a searing late burst on the Grumari circuit to clock in 44 minutes 26.42 seconds the day before her 43rd birthday.
Dutch rider Anna van der Breggen added a bronze medal to her gold in Sunday's road race as she finished 11 seconds back.
Swiss Cancellara wins men's time trial cycling
Swiss Fabian Cancellera won the men's Olympic time trial gold medal on Wednesday, producing a masterful ride around the 54.5km circuit.
Cancellara, who also won the event in 2008 in Beijing, beat Dutchman Tom Dumoulin by 47 seconds.

Six-time Olympian Fehaid Aldeehani battled wet and blustery conditions to win the gold medal in the men's double trap event on Wednesday.
A 49-year-old Kuwaiti competing under the Olympic flag, Aldeehani defeated Marco Innocenti of Italy in the duel for gold, nailing 26 orange targets out of 30 to Innocenti's 24.
The bronze medal went to Steven Scott who defeated fellow Briton Tim Kneale with a perfect score of 30 in their match-up for third place.
Japan's Tachimoto wins judo gold
Japan's Haruka Tachimoto won the women's under 70-kg judo gold medal for the sport's birthplace on Wednesday, defeating Colombia's Yuri Alvear who took silver.
Tachimoto, a four-time grand slam winner, was the only member of Japan's 14-strong team who was unseeded going into the competition. Earlier in the day, she beat top seed Kim Polling of the Netherlands.
Germany's Vargas Koch and Britain's Sally Conway each took bronze. Alvear had previously won a bronze medal in the 2012 Olympics.
Baker wins 90-kg men's judo
Top-seeded Mashu Baker won the men's under 90-kilogram judo competition on Wednesday in a night of double golds for the sport's birthplace of Japan.
He defeated Georgia's Varlam Liparteliani, who took silver. China's Cheng Xunzhao and 2015 world champion Gwak Dong-han of South Korea each took bronze.
