Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday inaugurated the ninth National Football League in Kolkata with a call to the players to strive for achieving excellence in the "beautiful game" and make India a major soccer power in the world.

He said efforts should be mounted by all to achieve success in the game of soccer both locally and internationally.

"Football is a game which is played in every country of the world" he said adding that sustained attempts should be made to make India a major soccer power.

Earlier, All-India Football Federation President P R Dasmunsi handed over a cheque of Rs 15 lakh to the Prime Minister for his National Relief Fund for the aid of the tsunami victims.
