Naveen bags silver in Jr World Boxing C'ship

July 30, 2011 19:50 IST

Naveen Kumar's dream run at the second AIBA Junior World Boxing Championships came to a disappointing end after he lost in the final of the flyweight category (50kg) to settle for a silver in Astana, Kazakhstan.

Naveen, the gold medallist of President Heydar Aliyev Cup in Azerbaijan, lost 4:8 to defending European junior champion Pat McCormack of England in title clash.

Against McCormack, who is the British Junior Championships gold medallist, the 14-year-old Indian boxer failed to get into his usual rhythm.

Even though, both the boxers started cautiously, it was the English lad who first broke the shackles and took early advantage with a crucial one point lead after the opening round.

After the initial advantage, McCormack never looked back and kept on building upon his lead to run away with the gold medal.

Naveen had earlier stunned Russia's National Junior Championship silver medallist Dzabrail Vizirkhanov in the semi-final.

Earlier, another Indian Sandeep Kumar bowed out in the semi-finals of the feather weight (54kg) category, losing to Aliyor Noraliev of Uzbekistan to secure a bronze medal.
