Mumbai FC started their journey in ONGC I-League football tournament on a winning, stunning Mohun Bagan 2-1 at the Vidyasagar Krirangan in Basarat on Saturday.

Ghanaian striker Abel Hammond, who was later adjudged man of the match, gave Mumbai FC the lead in the ninth minute and former East Bengal player Kalia Kulothungan scored the team's second goal in 24th minute.

Substituted for Shylo Malswam Tulunga in the 59th minute, P C Lalawmpuia pulled a goal back for Bagan in the 77th minute.

Mohun Bagan's defence faltered in the ninth minute as Hammond capitalised on a pass and slotted the ball home with a right-footer.

Hammond was instrumental in the team's second goal as well. His cross found an advancing Kulothangan, who finished with a perfect header.

Once the Mumbai outfit took a 2-0 lead, the pressure began to show on the green-and-maroon brigade, who tried hard to regroup but it was just not their day on the slushy surface.

Having just clinched the Calcutta Football League (CFL) Premier Division title to give their new coach Karim Bencherifa a perfect start, it was a reality check for Mohun Bagan.

Their Brazilian ace, Jose Barreto, came out with an all out effort but failed to turn the tide Bagan's way.

India captain Baichung Bhutia put up a sloppy show and was not in his usual self. The Sikkimese striker got many chances but failed.
