India's women's hockey team rallied splendidly to score a 2-1 victory over the United States in the second outing of their America tour, in Manheim, Pennsylvania, on Thursday.
After a goalless first quarter, the hosts took the lead four minutes into the second through Jill Witmer (19th minute), who scored from a penalty-corner.
Down by a goal the Indians came out stronger in the second half and repeatedly breached the US defence by breaking through via the flanks.
They restored parity in the last minute of the third quarter through Preeti Dubey, who converted a penalty-corner.
The final quarter was engrossing as both teams pressed for victory.
The Indians were rewarded for the perseverance when Lilima Minz scored from another set-piece in the 55th minute.
They held firm thereafter to register their first victory on the tour, having been beaten 2-3 in their opening match.
India plays Canada on Friday.
The tour of the United States is the Indians’ final preparation for the Olympics before flying out to Rio de Janeiro.
