India's rising woman shuttler P V Sindhu rallied to shock eighth seeded Porntip Buranaprasertsuk of Thailand, while RMV Gurusaidutt defeated fancied fellow-Indian Parupalli Kashyap to enter the men's singles quarter-finals in the Li Ning China Masters badminton tournament, in Changzhou, on Thursday.
World No 24 Sindhu, the lone Indian woman in the fray at the event in the absence of star compatriot Saina Nehwal, beat the world No 14 Thai 10-21, 21-7, 21-19 in 47 minutes.
The 17-year-old will meet second seed Li Xuerui of China in the last-eight stage on Friday.
Gurusaidutt also notched a come-from-behind victory over eighth seeded Kashyap. The lower-ranked of the two Indians prevailed 16-21, 21-18, 21-4 after slogging it out for 66 minutes.
A tougher challenge awaits him in the quarters, where he is up against top seeded Chinese Chen Long.
Meanwhile, Sourabh Verma and Ajay Jayaram set up a clash against each other after winning their second-round matches.
While Sourabh beat Chinese Taipei's Jen Hao Hsu 21-12, 21-16, Ajay defeated Singapore's Zi Liang Derek Wong 21-17, 21-9. Both the Indians took less than an hour for their victories.
But there was disappointment for India in the doubles, where eighth seeds Ashwini Ponnappa-Tarun Kona crashed out of the mixed event in the opening round itself.
The Indians lost 9-21, 14-21 to the Malaysian combination of Jian Guo Ong-Yin Loo Lim.
