Southampton knocked Everton out of the League Cup 4-3 on penalties on Tuesday after the third round tie at Goodison Park had ended 1-1.

Saints' keeper Angus Gunn saved Theo Walcott's penalty and defender Cedric slotted his effort past Maarten Stekelenburg to put the visitors into the last-16 where they will play away at Leicester City.

Danny Ings had given Southampton a deserved lead just before halftime, toe-poking a shot inside the post.

Everton showed more purpose in the second half with Ademola Lookman wasting an opportunity but it was the late introduction of Walcott who finally provided some spark.

The former Arsenal forward made no mistake in the 85th minute after a fine pass by Oumar Niasse split the defence.

Everton's Richarlison missed first in the penalty shootout, firing over the bar, but Southampton's Matt Targett then had his effort saved by Stekelenburg.
