Kavita Chahal (+81kg) emerged the lone Indian woman boxer to win a medal at the World Championships after settling for a bronze in Qinhuangdao, China, on Friday.
The Indian went down 9-15 to Kazakhstan's Yuldus Mamatkulova and bowed out of the event, but was the only one from the 10-member team to fetch a medal.
- Olympic slot confirmed, finally: Mary
This is India's worst performance at the mega-event as even five-time World champion M C Mary Kom (51kg) lost in the quarter-finals even though she secured an Olympic slot.
Kavita conceded a three-point lead in the fist round and though she tried hard to make a comeback, she was left with a big margin to cover and eventually went down 9-15.
The Indian boxing team thus rounded off a rather disappointing campaign, as the last time it returned with just one medal from the event was in 2001, when it won only a silver.
India's best show was in the 2006 edition when the country topped the table with eight medals.
