Marcus Allback's equalising goal for Sweden in the Group B match against England in Cologne on Tuesday was the 2,000th in World Cup finals history.

Allback made the score 1-1 in the 51st minute after Joe Cole had given England a first-half lead.

Lucien Laurent notched the first goal in a World Cup finals when he gave France a 19th-minute lead against Mexico in Montevideo, Uruguay in July 1930.

The 2006 tournament in Germany is the 18th edition.
