A friendly between Real Madrid and the Malaysia national team, due to take place on August 10, has been called off, the Football Association of Malaysia announced.

"The most eagerly anticipated match ... has now been cancelled," the FAM said in a statement, which went on to say that it had been forced into the decision by "reasons beyond (its) control".

But the New Straits Times daily said the match, part of an Asian tour by Real following its recent purchase of England captain David Beckham, had fallen victim to the financial demands of the Spanish champions.

The paper's Tuesday edition said Real had asked for 2.6 million euros ($2.94 million), adding that the cost of staging the match could be nearly 11 million ringgit ($2.9 million).

Many believe Real's acquisition of Beckham from Manchester United was partly to build support and merchandising opportunities for the club in Asia.
