September 17, 2005 16:50 IST

Recent poor performances by the Indian football team have resulted in the country falling two places to 134th in the latest FIFA rankings.

India, which lost a three-match series in Pakistan on goal difference and lost all their encounters in Fiji, finds itself level with the tiny Faroe Islands in the rankings for the month of September.

Incidentally, the two sides that India lost to recently are ranked below it -- Pakistan at 169 and Fiji at 139.

India comes 25th in the Asian rankings, led by Japan, which occupies the 16th spot overall, a gain of one place.

Iran is second.

Brazil hold on to the top spot in the overall rankings, enjoying a sizeable lead over second-placed the Netherlands, who relegated Argentina to the third spot.

The biggest gainer among top football nations was Sweden, which climbed five places to reach number 10. Denmark rose four places to 14.

On the other hand, traditional powerhouses England and Germany found themselves losing places.

England dropped four places to number 11 while Germany went from 11 to 15.

Meanwhile, the Indian women's football team held on to 57th place in the latest rankings, finding itself level with Haiti.

Germany, the United States and Norway held on to the top three spots.

North Korea and China are the top Asian sides in the women's rankings, coming in at numbers seven and nine respectively. India is ranked 10th in the continent.
