Croatia, helped by a mistake by veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, held Italy to a 1-1 away draw on Sunday, but their evening was ruined by their fans who twice interrupted play by throwing flares onto the pitch.

The contingent of around 5,000 Croatia fans stopped play for around three minutes after their team's equaliser in the first half of the Euro 2016 qualifier. Both teams have 10 points from four games and top Group H.

The second incident was more serious and the players were led off the field for 10 minutes as more flares landed on the field, filling the San Siro stadium with smoke.

Television pictures showed Croatia fans clashing with riot police who tried to quell the trouble.

At one point, it seemed there could be a repetition of the Euro qualifier in 2010 when Italy's match against Serbia in Genoa was called off after seven minutes because of crowd trouble caused by visiting fans.

Italy went ahead with their first attack in the 11th minute when Simone Zaza laid the ball back to Antonio Candreva and the bearded midfielder placed a low, powerful shot just inside the post from 25 metres, his first international goal.

They led for four minutes before Ivan Perisic made space on the edge of the area and blasted a low shot which Buffon, making his 146th appearance, misjudged and allowed to go under his body.

Buffon was in trouble again in first-half stoppage time when, under pressure from Mario Mandzukic, he failed to hold a cross and the ball fell to Ivica Olic whose shot was cleared off the line by Andrea Ranocchia.

Despite losing midfielder Luka Modric to injury in the first half, Croatia nearly grabbed a late winner when Perisic burst clear on the left only to fire his shot across the face of the goal.

Dutch cruise to Latvia win and ease pressure on Hiddink

Netherlands recorded a vital 6-0 home thrashing of Latvia on Sunday in their Euro 2016 Group A qualifier to ease the pressure on embattled coach Guus Hiddink.

Arjen Robben and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar both scored twice and were accompanied on the scoresheet by Robin van Persie and Jeffrey Bruma.

Hiddink's second stint in charge of Oranje has not gone to plan thus far with four defeats from their previous five matches and last week the 68-year-old suggested he would resign if his team failed to beat Latvia.

With Hiddink's job on the line, the World Cup semi-finalists dominated the match from the first whistle.

The Dutch are now third on six points from four games, three points behind joint leaders Iceland and the CzechRepublic, who will lock horns later on Sunday. Latvia remain on two points.

It was a 17th consecutive away defeat for Latvia, who have not won a game on foreign soil since September 2011, when they beat Georgia 1-0.

Battling Wales force goalless draw in Belgium

Wales survived a late onslaught to force a goalless draw against Belgium in their Euro 2016 qualifying Group B match on Sunday, with their key man Gareth Bale making a game-saving intervention in the dying seconds.

The Real Madrid star, who started his career as a left-back, was back in his old position with seconds remaining to clear a header off the line from substitute Christian Benteke.

But a winner for Belgium then would have been a huge injustice as Wales defended heroically against the team ranked fourth in the world.

Belgium, virtually camped in Wales' half for the last 10 minutes were left to rue wasted chances in the first half, the best of which saw Nicolas Lombaerts hit the post.

Wales, hoping to qualify for a major tournament for the first time since they reached the World Cup finals in 1958, are unbeaten after four games and top the group with eight points.

Second-placed Israel, who have six points from their opening two games, play Bosnia later on Sunday.

Belgium, have played one match less than Wales, have five points.

Surprise side Israel kept up their perfect start to their European Championship qualifying campaign on Sunday after a 3-0 win over Bosnia Herzegovina, going top in Group B in the process.

Goals by Gil Vermouth in the 36th minute, Omer Damari (45)and Eran Zahavi (70) secured the win as Bosnia played most of the second half with 10 men after Toni Sunjic was sent off in the 48th minute for bringing down Damari.

Israel have never qualified for the European Championship but are now top on nine points from three games after Wales drew 0-0 in Belgium.

Turkey goalkeeper Volkan Demirel walked out ahead of his country's Euro 2016 qualifier at home to Kazakhstan on Sunday after being abused by his own fans during the warm-up, media reports said.

The veteran plays for Turkish club team Fenerbahce but the match was held at the stadium of fierce rivals Galatasaray, whose supporters goaded the keeper.

Volkan Babacan played in goal instead after Demirel had left the stadium and Turkey went on to win 3-1.

Minnows Malta, who had failed to score in their previous six matches, stunned Bulgaria with a second-half penalty by Clayton Failla to draw 1-1 in their Euro 2016 Group H qualifier on Sunday.

The defeat left Bulgaria coach Luboslav Penev under more pressure after he was criticised by local media and fans for the team's poor performances last month.

Bulgaria, hoping to maintain their hopes of reaching the finals of a major competition for the first time since 2004, have struggled since their 2-1 win in Azerbaijan in their opening qualifier, losing 1-0 at home to Croatia and then 2-1 in Norway.

The draw gave Bulgaria four points from four games, five points behind third-placed Norway while Croatia and Italy lead the group with 10 points. Malta have one point.
