Opening wins for Ajax and Feyenoord, PSV held

Ajax Amsterdam gave coach Martin Jol a winning start with a 2-0 success over Groningen in their opening game of the new Dutch league season on Sunday.

Feyenoord beat NEC Nijmegen 2-0 to hand new coach Mario Been victory over his former side but PSV Eindhoven were held to a 3-3 draw by top-flight newcomers VVV Venlo.

Miralem Sulejmani opened the scoring for Ajax at Groningen four minutes before the break and Dennis Rommedahl settled the match with 18 minutes remaining when he netted a cross from Luis Suarez.

Danish international Jon Dahl Tomasson fired Feyenoord ahead after 10 minutes at home to NEC when he picked up a long pass from Ron Vlaar and scored from the rebound after NEC goalkeeper Gabor Babos blocked his first attempt.

Leroy Fer doubled the lead by converting a penalty 13 minutes before time after Rens van Eijden pulled down Sekou Cisse.

Nordin Amrabat and Ola Toivonen scored first-half goals to put PSV in control against Venlo but Achmed Ahahaoui and Keisuke Honda put the visitors level by the hour..

Toivonen headed home his second eight minutes before time but three minutes later Ruben Schaken took advantage of sloppy defending by Dirk Marcelis and salvaged a draw.

NAC Breda also started with a win after beating ADO Den Haag 2-1.

Champions AZ Alkmaar made a losing start on Saturday after going down 3-2 at Heracles Almelo.
