Delhi govt announces cash award for CWG medal winners

The Delhi Government on Monday announced cash awards of Rs 15 lakh, Rs 10 lakh and Rs 5 lakh for the ten sportspersons from the city who won gold, silver and bronze medals respectively at the recently concluded Commonwealth Games.

The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

Education Minister Arvinder Singh Lovely said coach of the medal winning athletes will also be awarded Rs 5 lakh in cash.

Officials said of the 10 sportspersons from the city who won medals in the Games, seven were wrestlers.

The gold medal winners in Wrestling are Sushil Kumar (66 kg free style), Yogeshwar Dutt (60 kg free style), Ravinder Singh (60 kg Greeco Roman) and Sanjay (74 kg Greeco Roman).

Silver medals were bagged by Joginder Kumar (120 kg free style) and Dharmendra Dalal (120 kg Greeco Roman).

A bronze medal was bagged by Anil Kumar in 55 kg free style event.

In shooting competitions, silver medals were bagged by Deepak Sharma (50 meters pistol) and Mansher Singh (trap shooting).

Samresh Jung bagged a silver medal in the 25 meters team event and a bronze in the 25 meters individual event.
