Marital discord won't affect Saroja's shooting

March 23, 2006 21:39 IST

Commonwealth gold medal-winning shooter Major Saroja Kumari made it clear that she would not bid farewell to the sport despite apprehension that it might affect her family life.

Reacting to recent media reports relating to her husband, Colonel Sushil Kumar Khanna's violent behaviour after her performance in 25m pistol pairs in Melbourne on March 17, Saroja said on Thursday that she was disturbed watching her family matters surface on television.

"I am very disturbed after watching all this on a TV channel," she told PTI-Bhasha over phone from Melbourne.

Saroja, however, said the situation is not so alarming to merit media attention.

She said Khanna never approved her active participation in sports, but ruled out the possibility of calling it quits.

"I will not sever ties with the sport just for the sake of my husband. But I think I would be able to convince him," she said.

She said she is tired of giving explanations to her friends after the matter drew media attention and apprehended that it might further affect the relationship with her husband.

In Meerut, Saroja's mother, Kamla Devi, alleged that her son-in-law had been indulging in violent activities after her daughter's success at the Commonwealth Games.

Kamla Devi revealed that after Saroja's medal-winning performance in Melbourne an angry Khanna rushed from Lucknow to Meerut and destroyed her photographs and also beat up his sons.

Meanwhile, Saroja has told her mother to wait till April 6 for her return from Melbourne and refrain from giving any statement to the media.
