Wrestling will be part of 2014 CWG: Cavanagh

October 10, 2010 14:32 IST

India's wrestlers have proved to be a big hit and have been a major contributor to the gold medal rush for the hosts at the ongoing 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

As of Saturday, they had already won nine gold medals. They would be looking to further increase their tally with three more wrestlers making it to the final on Sunday.

There were reports last week that wrestling, which has proven to be a huge hit at the Delhi Games, would be axed from future edition of the Commonwealth Games.

NP YadavHowever, Michael Cavanagh, chairman of the Commonwealth Games Scotland, confirmed on Sunday that wrestling is one of the 17 sports included in the programme of the 2014 Glasgow Games.

"It is 100 per cent certain that wrestling will be in the Glasgow 2014 Games," he said.

"Currently Men's Freestyle is definite, and Women's Freestyle and Men's Greco-Roman may be added following the Commonwealth Games Federation Sports Review in 2011."

He also stated they never considered dropping the sport from the 2014 Games.

"There has never been any consideration to remove wrestling from the 2014 programme," Cavanagh said.
