Chandrakant Mali failed to add a medal to India's tally as he finished fourth in the men's 85kg category in weightlifting at the Jawaharlal Nehru stadium sports complex in New Delhi on Friday.
Australia's Simplice Ribouem bagged the gold, while New Zealand's Richard Patterson and Mathieu Marineau of Canada claimed silver and bronze respectively.
Going into the competition, India hardly had any chance of winning a medal as Mali was placed in a group consisting of at least three Commonwealth lifters, who had done better than him.
The Indian lifter, who had lifted 146kg in snatch and 173kg in clean and jerk for a total effort of 319kg in the men's 85kg category during the selection trials of the Commonwealth Games last month, was virtually no match to the likes of Ribouem, who already had lifted 341kg, Patterson (334kg) and Paul Dumais (320kg).
However, Mali did not perform too badly as at the end of the competition he and bronze medallist Marineau were tied at a combined lift of 325kgs but the Indian lost out on the basis of more body weight than his opponent.
Mali, who also managed to better his trial performance by lifting 145kg in snatch and 180kg in clean and jerk for a total of 325kg, has a body weight of 84.87, while Marineau's weight is 84.46.
After the snatch event both Ribouem and Patterson finished with a maximum lift of 150kg to grab the top two positions.
At the end of competition, lifters -- Mali, Dumais and Marineau -- were tied at the third place with identical lifts of 145kg.
The 23-year-old Mali lifted 140kg and 145kg in his first two attempts but failed in his third attempt to lift 148kg.
In the clean and jerk event, Mali successfully lifted 175kg and 180kg in his first two attempts but failed in his third while trying to lift 182kg.
Meanwhile, 27-year-old Ribouem added another 183kg to his 150 of snatch to get a total of 333kgs on board, while 26-year-old Patterson finished with a combined effort of 331 (150 in snatch and 181 in clean and jerk).
Earlier, in the women's 69kg category, Christine Girard of Canada won the gold, while Janet Georges clinched silver and Itohan Ebireguesele of Nigeria took the bronze.
