Button believes he can retain F1 championship title

May 26, 2010 14:26 IST

Reigning Formula One champion Jenson Button insists that he is still in the race for the championship title despite a successful season so far for the Red Bull team.

jenson buttonButton has plummeted from first to fourth following Mark Webber's back-to-back wins for Red Bull. He is also facing tough competition from second placed Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel and third, Ferarri's Fernando Alonso.

"I can still be World Champion again. I am only eight points behind the leaders and given the new scoring system this year that is very close," The Sun quoted Button, as saying.

"Things can change so quickly with just one result," he added.

The 30-year-old heads for Sunday's Turkish Grand Prix knowing that another Red Bull 1-2 could spell disaster for him.

"Every race the team learns more about me and that helps. Things are not going badly as we've won two races, but I'm not going at 100 percent yet," Button said.

"If we've moved forward a little bit in qualifying and we're close to the Red Bulls at the start then there's a possibility we can race them," he added.

The Red Bull drivers are favourites to win the title this year, with the team already leading the constructors' championship, 20 points ahead of Ferrari.

They have consistently out-paced others till now in the season, claiming pole position for all six races.
