Hockey Olympian Tarlochan Bawa dies

Hockey Olympian Tarlochan Bawa died at his daughter's residence at Ambala in Haryana on Thursday, his family said.

He was 85 and leaves behind two daughters and a son.

Bawa, who was a member of the Indian team under Balbir Singh which won the gold medal in the 1948 London Olympics, had gone to visit his daughter at Ambala, where he breathed his last, his family said.

Born on February 12, 1923, in Lahore, he joined the Punjab Police as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in 1949 in undivided Punjab and retired in 1981 as Superintendent of Police in Haryana.

He studied at Dyal Singh College, Lahore, and was later selected to play for YMCA Club and Brothers Club, Lahore.

Bawa represented Punjab in the hockey Nationals from 1945 to 1956 and captained the Punjab hockey team in 1952. He also led the Indian hockey team in the Test matches against Japan.
