July 22, 2005 22:14 IST

Arjun Atwal played a one-under 69 on the first day of the US Ban Championship of Milwaukee, which had the opening interrupted by thunderstorms.

Atwal was tied-37th, even as 93 of the 156 golfers did not complete their rounds, and many of them had not even begun on the par-70 course that is one of the shortest on the PGA Tour.

Atwal started from the tenth and had birdies on the 11th, 14th and 18th, but also back-to-back bogeys on 16th and 17th.

On his second nine, he dropped a shot on the fourth to be even par for the day before picking up a birdie on the sixth to finish the day at one-under.

Daniel Chopra shot six birdies and two bogeys in his four-under 66 and he was tied for 11th. Chopra had birdies on second, fourth and sixth and a bogey on seventh. He had two more birdies on tenth and 16th and a bogey on 14th to finish the day at a good four-under 66.

Ben Crane, was on top of the leaderboard when thunderstorms interrupted his birdie spree on Brown Deer Park after a nearly five-hour delay.

Crane shot a 8-under 62.

Kenny Perry, the 2003 winner, shot a 63 and Chris Smith, Jeff Sluman and Jerry Kelly all had 64s.
