Grappler Suman to wrestle for 63kg freestyle bronze

November 26, 2010 11:12 IST

Indian women grappler Suman Kundu is in with a chance to bag the country's fourth bronze medal in wrestling as she will fight it out in the third-fourth place play-off bout, after losing in the semi-finals of the 63kg freestyle category in the Asian Games in Guangzhou on Friday.

However, overall it turned out to be another disappointing day for India on the mat as two other wrestlers in the fray -- Geeta and Gursharanpreet Kaur -- crashed out in the quarter-finals of the 55kg and 72kg freestyle event, respectively.

Suman started her day on a impressive note, defeating Thi Quyen Luong of Vietnam 3-1 in the first round and then got the better of Nestan Kiiazova of Kyrgyzstan with identical scoreline to enter the semi-finals, where she lost out to Nasanburmaa Ochirbat of Mongolia 0-3.

Suman now has an opportunity to make up for her mistake when she takes the mat in the bronze medal bout later on the final day of the wrestling competitions at the Huagong Gymnasium.

In the 55kg style, Geeta defeated South Korea's Jieun Um 3-1 in her opening bout before going down to Yon Hui Pak of North Korea by same margin in the quarters.

Gursharanpreet, however, turned out to be an easy customer for Guzel Manyurova of Kazakhstan as she tamed the Indian 5-0 in the quarter-finals of the eight-competitor 72kg field.
