November 22, 2014 19:07 IST

Kapil Dev, one shot off the lead after two rounds, faltered in the third and final round to finish 13th at the Asia Pacific Senior Amateur Championship at
Discovery Bay Golf Club in Hong Kong.

Kapil DevKapil, who played wonderfully on first two days for rounds of 73 and 72, shot nine-over 80 at the par-71 course and ended at 12-over 225.

Japan's Shingo Matsumoto emerged victorious after outlasting Andrew McKechnie of New Zealand in a gruelling sudden-death play-off.

Matsumoto, 60, made a solid par four on the sixth extra hole to consign McKechnie, who could only bogey, to second place after the pair had tied in regulation play on a three-day total of five-over 218.

Overnight leader Gordon Claney of Australia finished a shot outside the play-off in solo third place.

Kapil was tied fifth after the first round of 73 but his second round 72 put him in second place at three-over 145 and he was one behind then leader Gordon Claney. But he misfired in the final round.

The historic Asia Pacific Senior Amateur Championship is an Asia Pacific Golf Confederation event and was hosted in Hong Kong by the Hong Kong Golf  Association for the third time.
