2004 - Athens, Greece
The 2004 edition witnessed the Games return to the place where it all began - Athens. The Greek capital, having lost the race to host the 1996 Games (to Atlanta) made up for it eight years later.
Coming to performances, swimmer Michael Phelps wins became the first athlete to win 8 medals (6 gold and 2 bronze) in non boycotted Games.
Athens also witnessed notable performances from Hicham El Guerrouj - who became the first athlete since Paavo Nurmi in 1924 to win gold in both 1500 m and 5000 m - and Liu Xiang, whose win in the 110 m hurdles secured China its first ever athletics gold.
As regards India, Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore provided the lone medal, his second place finish in the men's double trap event ensuring the country its first ever individual silver.
