Legends - Ferenc Puskas Puskas was the antithesis of a soccer player. He was short, couldn't head and used one foot. "If you kick with both feet, you fall on your arse," he would remark. Puskas was a major and played for the Hungarian army team, so he came to be known as the 'Galloping Major'. Later, he moved to Real Madrid where he played along side Alfredo di Stefano. This duo is considered to be among soccer's most feared partnerships upfront. Hungary was undefeated when Puskas held sway for four years. The unbeaten run came to an end only in the finals of the 1954 World Cup. An injured Puskas took the field, netted one goal, but Hungary went down fighting, 2-3 to Germany. Puskas also represented Spain. But he excelled playing for Hungary. He scored 83 goals in internationals, an all time record. Puskas remains the best sharpshooter the game has known. |
