Hiddink's next assignment took him to Russia, where he initially signed a two-and-a-half year contract to coach the national team, with an option for another two years (which he eventually did).

In February 2007, she was fined and given a six-month suspended prison sentence in his native the Netherlands for tax fraud.
However, to his credit he helped Russia qualify for Euro 2008 at the expense of England.
After a 4-1 thrashing by Spain in their opening game8, Hiddink went on to lead Russia to the semi-finals, stunning Marco Van Basten's Netherlands along the way, where they lost 3-0 to eventual winners Spain.
