August 05, 2008

Anand beat young Norwegian Magnus Carlsen [Images] 3-1 in the four-game final to win the 13th Grenkeleasing Rapid World Championship on Sunday.

Anand headed the league stage, and then won the first two games of the four-game final to move into a commanding position. A draw in the third confirmed his title and the fourth game was a formality and ended in a 11-move draw.

Anand, playing with white pieces, thus extended his own record of wins in Mainz.

In the league Anand scored two wins over Alexander Morozevich and drew twice each against Carlsen and Judit Polgar in the four-player tournament.
