Deisler back to depression clinic

October 19, 2004 11:21 IST

Germany midfielder Sebastian Deisler flew back from Turin on Monday to return to the clinic where he was treated for depression a year ago.

Deisler, who had travelled to Italy for Bayern Munich's match against Juventus on Tuesday, asked to speak to Bayern coach Felix Magath and manager Uli Hoeness after lunch on Monday, Bayern said in a statement.

"He asked to talk to me after lunch and said he wasn't feeling well. He will go to see Professor Florian Holsboer on Tuesday," Hoeness said in reference to the man who had treated Deisler a year ago.

It is a bitter blow for the 24-year-old, who was hailed as unique playmaking talent, but whose promising career has been beset by injury and a five-month gap last season while he was fighting depression.

His doctor said at the time that pressure to live up to expectations and the fight against injuries as well as private problems had taken their toll.

Deisler had made an impressive start to the season, winning a recall to the German squad, but went off the boil in recent matches.

"Two weeks ago, I had the feeling that something was up with him and spoke to him. But he said everything was fine," Hoeness said.

Magath said he regretted not being able to shield the player from pressure.

"From the start, it was important that Deisler was given time to stabilise. Perhaps it's just a small setback," Magath said.

One of few truly creative players Germany has to offer, Deisler is an automatic choice for the national team when fully fit.

Before his international return against Brazil last month, Deisler had not played for his country since a Euro 2004 qualifier in September 2003. A few weeks later he started his treatment for depression.

His partner, Eunice, was then going through a difficult pregnancy. In January she gave birth to a son, Raphael. Five days later, Deisler left the Munich clinic where he was being treated and in February he was back in training.
