March 12, 2004 21:54 IST

Canada overcame Japan 3-2 to finish 11th in the men's Olympic hockey qualifying tournament in Madrid on Friday.

For Canada, Connor Grimes (8th minute), Ravinder Kahlon (29th) and Ken Pereira (40th) scored while Japan, who began their fightback rather late, replied through Ryuji Furusato (42nd) and Kazuyuki Ozawa (70th).

The Canadians decided late last night to continue playing in the tournament after first expressing concern about the safety of their players in the wake of the bomb blasts in Madrid yesterday.

In another match, Poland recovered from an early setback to defeat Malaysia 4-2 and finish ninth in the tournament.

In a match that was played in inclement weather, Tomasz Choczaj (20th), Dariusz Rachwalski (41st), Slawomir Choczaj (50th) and Krzysztof Kmiec (60th) scored for Poland while Boon Huat Chua (29th) and Tajol Rosli Mohamad (39th) scored Malaysia's goals.
