Anjali, Rathore strike gold

Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Anjali Bhagwat won gold medals as India put up a sterling show, picking up two of the three golds at stake, on the fourth day of the shooting competition in the Afro-Asian Games in Hyderabad on Wednesday.

Rathore bagged the men's double trap gold with a total of 174 points while Ranjan Sondhi clinched the silver in the event with a tally of 167.

Bhagwat, who won a silver in the women's 10m air rifle event yesterday, claimed her maiden the gold at the Games in the 50 metre rifle 3-position event with a total of 675.5 points.

Kuheli Ganguly took the bronze in the event with a tally of 669.7.

India now have three golds, six silver and two bronze medals from the shooting range.

Bhagwat, who was in second place after the qualifying round following a weak kneeling round, found her ryhthm in the final and scored 98.5 points to win the gold.

The silver went to Olga Dovgun of Kazakhstan, who had fired a perfect 600 in the 50m prone event on Monday.

Meanwhile, Rathore, who became the first Indian in 41 years to win a bronze medal in a World championship double trap event last month, was confidence personified on his way to the golden haul.

He led the field of six, including three Indians, throughout the event and went on to take the gold by a margin of seven points.

M Nicholson of Zimbabwe won the bronze medal.
