Sania romps into last four

October 09, 2003 21:16 IST

Indian tennis sensation Sania Mirza entered the semi-finals in the second US $10,000 ITF tournament, beating Silawan Choptang of Thailand 6-1, 6-3 in Jakarta on Thursday.

The GVK-sponsored Wimbledon girls' doubles champion played a fine all-round game to brush aside the meek challenge of Choptang.

She started off in style, packing power into her serves and ground strokes, and raced away to a 5-0 lead. The Thai girl just about managed to hold serve for the first time in the match before Sania served out the first set.

In the second set, the Thai girl put up a brave fight and at one stage led 3-2. But the Indian ace lifted her game by a few notches to win the next four games and snatch a place in the semi-finals, where she will meet local girl, Montinee Tangphong.

Sania also entered the semi-finals in the doubles event, teaming up with Rushmi Chakravarthi. The Indian duo easily beat Eny Sulistyowati and Mimma Chernovita of Indonesia 6-2, 6-1.
