Venus outgrows Harry Potter

June 25, 2003 17:24 IST

When Venus Williams last won the Wimbledon women's title two years ago, she was reading the adventures of Harry Potter, the world's most famous boy wizard.

Asked if she had joined the bookstore queues last weekend to buy book five of the great publishing phenomenon, she said: "No, I didn't. I don't know if I'm going to. I might be a little old now."

"I'm 23, I've got to really focus on things that are really going to enrich my life," she said.

What a difference a day makes for towering giant-killer Ivo Karlovic.

The 6 foot 10 inch (2.08 metre) Croatian -- the tallest player ever to play at Wimbledon -- first started at a cheap hotel with a room so small that he had to use a bag and chair to extend his bed.

After defeating defending champion Lleyton Hewitt in one of Wimbledon's biggest shocks, Karlovic moved into a luxury hotel with a huge double bed for his lanky frame to fill.

He can now stretch out in comfort, sip a glass of wine and watch DVDs on the wide-screen television.

Winning is everything at Wimbledon -- and fiercely superstitious players stick rigidly to their favourite talisman.

British hero Tim Henman carries round the same grip bag he has had since he was 16, explaining "I don't know why I have still got it but I have. It means I'm keeping a grip, I suppose."

American pin-up James Blake kept a champagne cork after winning a Davis Cup tie.

But Slovakian beauty Daniela Hantuchova won't even say what hers is. "I have my little talisman but I am not talking about that. I have to have it and keep it a secret."

Spanish teenage tennis prodigy Rafael Nadal-Parera, who is the nephew of international soccer defender Miguel Angel Nadal of Real Mallorca, confesses to divided loyalties when it comes to the 11-aside game.

"When my uncle was playing for Barcelona, we wanted Barcelona to win," he told reporters at Wimbledon after his first round win over hotly fancied Croatian Mario Ancic.

"But after my uncle left the Barcelona team, then we are all for Real Madrid. I've got nothing against Barcelona but I prefer Real Madrid to win," he said.

Nadal-Parera was overjoyed that England captain David Beckham will be joining the Spanish League champions: "It's a good transfer. Every year Real Madrid has got a good transfer like this one."
