Veteran Joe Paul Ancheri came up with his best performance of the season, scoring three goals as JCT Mills, Phagwara, thrashed Mahindra United, Mumbai, 6-2 in a 11th round match in the seventh National Football League, at the Guru Nanak stadium in Ludhiana, on Sunday.
The India player, besides controlling midfield well for the millmen, did not squander any opportunity to find the net.
The other goal scorers for Punjab's premier soccer outfit were the young striker Harvinder, who scored a brace, and Jaswinder, who set the ball rolling for JCT in the second minute of the match.
For the losers, Brazilian striker Ednei Jose Damasio and Ivory Coast striker Monga Ali Samson found the net.
At half-time, JCT led 2-1 with goals from Jaswinder and Ancheri.
With this win, JCT moved to seventh in the league table with 14 points.
Mahindra, with ten points, are in ninth position.
The millmen, fresh from their upset victory over Churchill Brothers, at Margao, Goa, outclassed their opponents, who had top strikers in their ranks, like Damasio and Monga Ali Samson. Mahindra's coach, former Czech Republic World Cup player Karel Stromsik had no answer to the strategy of JCT, who seemed all out to humble their opponents.
In only the second minute of play striker Jaswinder put JCT ahead with a neatly executed shot from inside the penalty box.
Then, in the 12th minute, Ancheri moved up, and intercepting a pass from medio Hardeep Saini, shot past the rival custodian.
Thereafter, the JCT players went on the defensive and Mahindras mounted one attack after another and were finally rewarded when their Brazilian striker Damasio beat JCT custodian Mansuru Mohammed in the 28th minute.
At half-time, the local outfit led 2-1.
After the breather, the millmen, after some pep talk from their coach Parminder Singh, were in their elements and launched a number of raids on the rival defence. Ancheri scored his second goal in the 54 minute of play after combining with veteran I.M.Vijayan and the ever dependable Hardip Saini.
Young striker Harvinder, the leading goal scorer for the millmen, was not far behind. He pumped in two goals in the 58th and 78th minutes.
Mahindra's had the consolation of scoring a goal in the 60th minute through Monga Ali Samson.
Ancheri scored his third goal in injury time to give JCT, champions in the first edition of the NFL, a convincing 6-2 victory.
