For Pete's sake

At the quarter-finals of the 1995 Australian Open, Sampras wept in the fifth set against Courier when a fan shouted for him to win the match for his coach Tim Gullickson, who had left the tournament because of complications from a brain tumor.

On centre court last night he cried again.

After 15 years and a record 14 Grand Slams, Pete Sampras bid farewell to the sport. Forever.

And unlike so many before him, who went on too long, Sampras timed his retirement to perfection - at the same venue where he picked his maiden Grand Slam title.

Tributes and tears filled the Arthur Ashe Stadium as Sampras took an emotional final bow at the U.S. Open on Monday.
