'How can Hewitt know how my shoulder is?'

M D Riti in Bangalore

"How can (Lleyton) Hewitt sitting in Australia know how my shoulder is?" asks Indian tennis ace Mahesh Bhupathi. "He is making some baseless comments from far away."

Bhupathi was reacting to a statement from the Aussie tennis star, saying that team problems must be the reason why he will not partner Leander Paes in the ongoing Davis Cup tie against Australia in Adelaide.

The reason for Bhupathi's absence is that his shoulder is acting up, preventing him from playing the Davis Cup. Vishal Uppal will partner Paes in Saturday's doubles match.

"My shoulder is giving me trouble, that is why I opted out of the Davis Cup," Bhupathi told rediff.com

In response to Hewitt's comment that Bhupathi's shoulder had not prevented him from winning the US Open doubles title last fortnight, Bhupathi said: "That does not mean it cannot act up now, does it?"

"Besides, Paes and I are playing together in the Asian Games in Korea two weeks from now," he continues."If we had a problem with our tennis partnership, we would not be doing that."

"Hewitt is in no position to know the exact condition of my son's shoulder," says C G Krishna Bhupathi, Mahesh's father and coach. "Only Mahesh can know that, and he says clearly that it is bothering him. That is why he is not playing the Davis Cup."
