India continue good show
in Junior Fed Cup

The Indian girls continued their good run to down Argentina 2-1 in the play-off match in the Under-16 Junior Federation Cup finals, being played at La Baule, France, on Thursday.

They will now face Hungary in the 5th-6th place play-off on Friday. Hungary defeated Uruguay 2-1.

For the first time in the tournament India won both the singles matches to gain an unassailable lead.

Ankita Bhambri gave India a superb start, playing attacking tennis right through to win her match against Ariela Perez 6-3, 6-3.

Sania Mirza came up with an even better display and ran out an easy winner against Andrea Benitez. She won 6-2, 6-0.

In the doubles, Kartiki Bhat and Sania went down 6-7(3), 5-7.

In the other play-offs, Canada defeated Brazil 3-0 and US edged Germany 2-1 in the 9th to 12th place matches. France blanked South Africa 3-0 and Korea defeated second seed Chinese Taipie 2-1 in the 13th to 16th place matches.

Russia will face Belarus while China will take on the Czech Republic in the semi-finals on Friday. The Czechs are the only team in the tournament with an unbeaten record this week and are attempting to capture their third consecutive title.
