FIFA to relax transfer window rules

FIFA is to relax its transfer rules to allow out-of-contract players to join clubs after the transfer window has closed.

World soccer's governing body confirmed on Friday it had informed national associations of its move this week.

A FIFA spokesman said out-of-contract players would now be allowed to join a new club any time during the year.

FIFA and European governing body UEFA introduced the transfer window system this season.

The first window closed at the end of August, meaning no player can now be transferred between clubs until January 2003 when the next one opens.

There has been criticism of the rule across Europe. Out-of-contract players have complained it blocked their chances of finding jobs with teams who lost players to injury.
