Tollygunge upset Mohun Bagan

Tollygunge Agragami pulled off a big upset, prevailing over a lacklustre Mohun Bagan 2-1 in a Kolkata Super Division football league match on Monday.

Playing a fast, coordinated game, Tollygunge dominated the 90-minute exchange, and scored through Akeem Abulalem and Asim Biswas.

Brazilian ace Jose Barreto converted a penalty to reduce the margin for Bagan.

Bagan, who have looked a pale shadow of their formidable self in the league so far, continued to look unimpressive and were done in by their poor cohesion and a shoddy defence at the Salt Lake stadium.

The defeat was a setback to their hopes of regaining the title as they now trail leaders East Bengal by six points.

With 16 points in their kitty from nine matches, Bagan finished their first leg engagements in the third spot, immediately behind Mohammedan Sporting. However, both Sporting and defending champions East Bengal have played a match less than the green and maroon brigade.

Tollygunge, who completed their first leg engagements, with 15 points, are fourth.

The top five teams, including Port Trust, would now move to the round-robin Super five stage to decide the ultimate champion. The points in the first leg are carried to the Super Five.
