Salgaocar win Goa Pro League
Salgaocar Sports Club were crowned champions of the Kingfisher Goa Professional Football League on Friday, after getting the better of Churchill Brothers by a solitary goal in their last league match at the Nehru stadium in Fatorda, Goa.
The all-important goal for the winners came in 33rd minute through Sunday Seah, who headed in a cross from the right flank by Dennis Cabral.
Salgaocar could have won by a bigger margin had they utilised the chances that came their way.
In the first-leg both teams played out a goaless draw.
Salgaocar, with 37 points, regained the championship after a gap of three years. They had won the title in the inaugural year in 1998.
Vasco Sports Club finished second with 34 points. Sporting Club de Goa and Fransa Football club, with 20 points each, Dempo, with 17 points, and Churchill Brothers, 13 points, followed them in that order.
Out of the 14 matches they played, Salgaocar won 12, drew 1 and lost one, scoring 31 goals and conceding only five.
Churchill Brothers, who placed sixth, registered only three wins, had four draws and lost seven matches.
Cabral Sports Club, with eight points, and bottom-placed St Anthony's, four points, will play their last league match tomorrow. Even if St. Anthony's win against Cabral, they will be relegated to the lower division.
