Philippoussis to take
part in Tata Open

Big serving Australian and winner of nine ATP titles Mark Philippoussis has confirmed his entry at the Rs 19.6 million (Rs 1.96 crore) prize money Tata Open to be held in Chennai from December 30 to January 5, 2003.

Announcing this in Kolkata, IMG's senior international vice-president Ravi Krishnan said the powerful server's presence would provide a real treat to tennis fans.

Nicknamed 'Scud' for his missile-like serve, Philippoussis finished in the top 20 for four consecutive years and has earned over $5 million in career prize money, a release from the tournament organisers said.

"I'm really looking forward to playing in India," the release quoted the player as saying from San Diego, USA. "I have heard great things about the tournament through other players. Hopefully, I can get a good start to the new year at the Chennai tournament," he said.

The Australian, who has been clocked with the second fastest serve in the history of professional tennis at 225.6 km, was out of action for the major part of last year due to injury, but reached the finals at the Adelaide Open this year, where he went down to Greg Rusedski of Britain.

Philippoussis would be accompanied by his coach Peter Mcnamara, the release added.
