Rusedski undergoes surgery

Britain's Greg Rusedski underwent foot surgery on Monday and will miss the rest of the tennis season.

The powerful left-hander -- a former U.S. Open finalist now ranked 34th in the world -- had surgery on his left foot in Munich, Germany, his agent said.

"His left foot was operated on in Munich today and this will mean he will not be competing for the rest of the season," a spokeswoman for Rusedski said.

The operation was the same kind as that performed on the 29-year-old's right foot in 1999.

Three years ago it kept him out of the sport for a little under three months.

Providing there are no complications Rusedski should be fit for the Australian Open in January and the Davis Cup first round clash against Australia in early February.

Rusedski suffered the foot injury during his third round match against eventual champion Pete Sampras at the U.S. Open last month.

It forced him out of Britain's recent Davis Cup clash with Thailand, a tie won almost single-handedly by Tim Henman.

Henman himself is also recovering from a shoulder injury and the pair of Britons withdrew from this week's CA Tennis Trophy in Vienna.

Rusedski will now definitely miss the remaining Masters tournaments in Madrid starting October 14 and Paris, Bercy, starting October 28.

Henman still plans to play in Madrid, Paris and Basel at the International Series from October 21 to 27.

Henman's wife, Lucy, is due to give birth to their first child later this month, however, which will likely alter his plans.

The world number five is in a great position to qualify for the season-ending $3.7 million Masters Cup in Shanghai and end the year on a high.
