East Bengal lift
Independence Day Cup

Kolkata giants East Bengal annexed the Independence Day Cup, defeating three-time cup winners Oil India Limited, Duliajan, 2-0 in a scrappy final in Nagaon, Assam, on Saturday.

The visitors went ahead in the 42nd minute of the match at the Nurul Amin Stadium when attacker Alvito D'Cunha took a shot from the right wing off a pass from Kaustuv Ghosh.

The gold and yellow brigade increased the lead in the 82nd minute when substitute Chandan Das converted a penalty.

Three-time winners OIL, playing in the sixth final of the cup, squandered two scoring chances in the 37th and 77th minutes in an otherwise slow-paced encounter.

The East Bengal forwards also missed few sitters during the game.

East Bengal had defeated Nagaland Police by an identical margin while OIL beat another Kolkata giant, Mohammedan Sporting 2-1 to move into the final.
