Tzipi Obziler scores a grand double

Top seed Tzipi Obziler of Israel drubbed third seed Adriana Barna of Germany 6-2, 6-2 in an hour and ten minutes to win the singles title in the $25,000 ITF tennis tournament in Mumbai on Saturday.

The Israeli lass went on to score a grand double. She and Katarina Daskovic of Yugoslavia beat Shelly Stephens of New Zealand and Scarlett Werner of Germany 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in a battle between two unseeded pairs in the doubles final.

Obziler was in fine touch in the singles final and breezed through as her opponent was unable to maintain any level of consistency in her play.

Ironically, it was Barna who effected the first break of the match, when she broke Obziler, who is ranked 188 in the world, in the third game to lead 2-1. However, she failed to hold serve in the fourth game and squandered the advantage. With breaks in the sixth and eighth games, the top seed went on to bag the first set at 6-2.

In the second set too the German dropped serve in the fourth game and trailed 1-3. However, she did well to break the Israeli in the fifth only to drop serve in the sixth game and fall behind 2-4.

Obziler then held serve to increase the lead to 5-2 and forced another break in the eighth game to win the set and match.

Obziler won $3000 while Barna had to be content with $1700. Obziler also shared the doubles purse of $1200 with Daskovic.
