Italy's Parma suffered a shock UEFA Cup second round exit on Thursday as Greek side Panathinaikos and Scottish champions Celtic won their battles for local pride.
Wisla Krakow crushed Parma 4-1 in Poland to eliminate the Serie A side 5-3 on aggregatein the surprise result of the night.
Panathinaikos hit Turkish rivals Fenerbahce with three first-half goals in Athens, eventually winning 4-1 to earn a 5-2 aggregate win. At Ewood Park Chris Sutton scored against his former club as Celtic beat Blackburn Rovers 2-0, winning 3-0 overall.
Italy's Lazio also advanced, as did England's Leeds United, whose striker Alan Smith scored four goals in their 4-1 win over Hapoel Tel Aviv.
In Friday's third round draw they will be joined by the third-placed teams from the Champions League first group stage, including Liverpool, Dynamo Kiev and French trio AJ Auxerre, Olympique Lyon and RC Lens.
Parma took a slender 2-1 lead to Poland and looked in control when Adriano gave them the lead on five minutes. But Wisla had other ideas and two goals late in the second half by Kamil Kosowski and Maciej Zurawski forced extra time.
Zurawski quickly grabbed his second and Daniel Dubicki then sealed a night of glory for the Poles.
Panathinaikos completed the job they started in Istanbul two weeks ago to see off Fenerbahce, the first competitive meeting between clubs from the two regional rivals.
Goals by Nikos Liberopoulos, Yiannis Goumas and Jan Michaelsen before halftime put the Greek side out of reach in a match which passed off without any security problems.
FOUR-GOAL SMITH
Celtic made Blackburn pay for failing to score in Glasgow a fortnight ago on a sweet evening for Sutton.
The former Rovers striker headed home Celtic's second after Swede Henrik Larsson, scorer of the first leg's only goal, gave the Scottish team a 15th-minute lead.
Italian international Enrico Chiesa grabbed a 77th minute equaliser to put Lazio through 2-1 on aggregate against 1991 European champions Red Star in front of 55,000 fans in Belgrade.
Seven minutes earlier Branko Boskovic had put Red Star 1-0 ahead, levelling the tie after Lazio's 1-0 first leg victory in Rome.
England striker Smith scored all Leeds's goals as Terry Venables's side recovered in style from the shock of conceding a second minute goal against Hapoel Tel Aviv in Florence, the neutral venue for Thursday's match due to security concerns in Israel.
Yossi Abuksis rocked the English side with his fine free kick but was later sent off as Hapoel crumbled under Smith's one-man assault.
The fiery striker scored with two angled shots and two headers to lift the pressure on Venables.
Fulham also went through, winning 2-1 against Dinamo Zagreb at Loftus Road to advance 5-1 overall.
But first division Ipswich exited in agonising fashion, conceding an 87th minute goal at Slovan Liberec that levelled the tie at 1-1 before losing a penalty shootout 4-2. Goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky was the Czech side's hero, saving two spotkicks.
Germany's Werder Bremen exited 5-4 on aggregate after being held 3-3 by 10-man Vitesse Arnhem of the Netherlands.
Spanish duo Celta Vigo and Real Betis, Paris St Germain of France, Belgium's Anderlecht, Schalke 04 of Germany and Turkish club Besiktas were among the other leading sides to progress.
