Eriksson has full backing of FA
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has the full backing of the Football Association following the departure of chief executive Adam Crozier, according to FA chairman Geoff Thompson.
"I spoke to Sven before I left for Copenhagen (for a UEFA Executive Committee meeting). I told him he has got my total commitment and that of the FA," Thompson was quoted as saying in Saturday's Daily Express newspaper.
"We want him to stay and he was happy with that. He has made it clear to me that he was carrying on and that events at the FA were not an issue with him.
"He has given me assurances that he wants to continue as coach to the England team, and we have given him assurances that we want him to continue," said Thompson.
"Sven raised with me the issue of a new assistant coach and I told him he would have our full support on that."
Steve McClaren resigned as assistant coach last week so that he could focus on his full-time job as manager of premier league Middlesbrough.
"He (Eriksson) said that he wanted to go away and think about whether he should go for another part-time coach or think about a full-time appointment," said Thompson.
Speculation about Eriksson's position has been mounting since the resignation of Crozier, who appointed him as England coach, last week.
Crozier stepped down after clashing with premier league clubs over the running of the game and commercial deals.
British bookmakers William Hill had cut the odds on Eriksson quitting his post by the end of the year after media reports that the Swede was planning to meet Thompson on Friday for showdown talks.
But the FA said no talks had been planned as Thompson was in Copenhagen.
Thompson said: "I shall speak again with Sven when I return from Copenhagen but I very much suspect there is nothing more to talk about on the subject of his future considering what he has already told me."
