India in quarters of Junior
Fed Cup qualifier

India beat Uzbekistan to win their third straight match and enter for the quarter-finals in the Asia-Oceania girls' qualifying tournament for the junior Federation Cup tennis event, at the Gelora Senayam tennis stadium in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Thursday.

Seeded fourth in the tournament, India registered a 3-0 victory over the sixth seeds to secure the top spot in Group 3.

Earlier, they had defeated The Philippines and Indonesia by an identical margin.

India No. 2 Ankita Bhambri easily beat Vlada Ekshibarova 6-3, 6-0, while Sania Mirza overcame Ivanna Israilova 7-5, 6-3.

Mirza then teamed up with Kartiki Bhat in the doubles to beat Elina Arutunova / Israilova 6-1, 6-2 and completed the sweep.

India finished the pool matches with a 9-0 record dropping only one set. They will face 3rd seeds Thailand in the quarters.

In another Group 3 match, Indonesia beat The Philippines 3-0 to also qualify for the quarter-finals.

In Group 1, top seeds Australia defeated Malaysia 3-0. Australia and Malaysia both qualified for the quarters.

In Group 2, Korea beat Thailand 3-0 and Japan beat Sri Lanka 3-0. Korea and Thailand qualified for the last eight.

China defeated New Zealand 3-0 in a Group 4 match. Chinese Taipei and China qualified for the next round.

The 2002 Junior Federation Cup finals will take place in La Baule, France, from September 9.

Four teams will qualify from the Asia-Oceania group for the finals. France, as host nation, are automatic qualifiers.

The international team competition for players aged 16 and under was launched by the ITF in 1985 as the "World Youth Cup" between 1988 and 2001.

This year the ITF re-branded the boys' competition as "Junior Davis Cup". The girls' competition was also changed to "Junior Fed Cup".
