Chakravarti lone Indian survivor

National champion Rushmi Chakravarti kept Indian hopes alive after beating France's Elodie Lebescond to move into the quarter-finals, while top seed Angelika Bachmann of Germany was ousted by unseed Austrian Sybillie Bammer, in the US$ 25,000 ITF women's tennis tournament in Delhi on Wednesday.

Rushmi justified her wild card as she got the better of the Frenchwoman 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.

The contest between Bachmann and Bammer surprisingly turned out to be one-sided, with the Austrian chalking out a straight-set win. She conceded only four games to the top seed before winning 6-1, 6-3.

The other Indian in the fray, Sonal Phadke bowed out without a fight. She lost to the Czech Republic's Dominika Luzarova 2-6, 2-6.

Luzarova had upset second seed Eun-ha Kim in the first round.

China's Shuai Peng continued her victory run to move into the last eight. She overwhelmed Britain's Camila Kremer 6-2, 6-2.

In other pre-quarter-final matches, fourth seed Korean Young Ja Choi defeated Britain's I Woodroffe 6-2. 7-6(5); fifth seeded Russian Maria Kondratieva beat compatriot E.Kozhokina 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-4; Solvaika's Urska Vesenjak overpowered Satomi Kinjo (Japan) 6-2, 6-4 and Czech Republic's Eva Birnerova outplayed compatriot Sromova 6-4, 6-2.

In the doubles quarter-finals, Shelley Stephens (NZ) / Shalini Malhotra (Ind) bt F.Lebescond / C Rousseau (Fra) 6-3, 6-2; E.Birnerova / J.Hlavackova (Cze) bt Sunitha Rao (USA) / E Kozhokina (Rus) 6-4, 6-4; R.Chakravarthi / S Jayalaksmi (Ind) bt M. Kondratieva / G Fattakhetdinova (Rus) 4-6, 6-3, 6-2; Young-Ja Choi / Eun Ha Kim (Kor) beat A Keothavong / l.Woodroffe (Bri) 6-1, 6-1.
