Indian eves scrape
past South Africa

Indian eves scraped past South Africa 1-0 in their second match of the 1st Women's Champions Challenge on Sunday, at the Randburg Astro Turf, South Africa.

In the other two matches of the day, England scored an upset 1-0 victory over Korea, while the United States defeated plucky Russia 2-1.

Jyoti Sunita Kullu scored the solitary Indian goal in the 13th minute.

South Africa squandered their chances, with striker Pietie Coetzee and Kerry Bee looking totally out of form and failed to convert any of the 13 penalty-corners awarded against India's two.

On Saturday, India drew their opening match against England 3-3.

Korea opened the match with a fierce assault on the England goalmouth to force five penalty-corners in the first six minutes. But superb goalkeeping by Hilary Rose and a defence well marshaled by skipper Melanie Clewlow kept the Koreans at bay.

England weathered the storm and gradually fought their way back into the match that went into half time goalless.

The second half saw England take control of the match as the Koreans wilted in the early afternoon heat.

England's reward came in the 55th minute when Leisa King scored the winner from a well-worked move inside the Korean circle. For Korea it was a case of what might have been as they forced eleven penalty corners to England's two.

In the day's final match, the American goals came from Antionette Lucas and Tracey Larson in the 47th and 52nd minutes.

Russia's goal came from Galina Bassaitchuk in the 60th minute.

After two day's play India, England and the United States are tied at the top of the table on four points followed by Korea on three points.
